The owners of a former prominent big box store in Chatham, are looking at possibly turning it into indoor public storage space.
A big chunk of the former Target store on Grand Ave.–over 5,000 square meters, has sat mostly vacant since it closed in 2015.
Part of the former store located at Thames Lea Plaza was turned into a grocery store, and part into a fitness club over the past few years.
At tonight’s Chatham-Kent planning meeting, council will consider a zoning bylaw amendment to allow for public storage for part of the remaining vacant space.
In a report to council, it says the building’s owners are finding there are certain limitations in converting the space into smaller commercial units. As well, the commercial retail sector has also been experiencing a shift in demand due to the prominence of online retailers whereby vacant commercial space is becoming less desirable.
