It appears Ontario voters will be heading to the polls next month.
During a news conference about transit in Brampton Friday morning, Premier Doug Ford confirmed he will call an early election next Wednesday, with a vote to be held February 27.
Ford told reporters his government needs a mandate to potentially spend billions of dollars to protect people’s jobs and fight tariffs threatened by US President Donald Trump.
The Premier said Ontario’s auto industry could be hit particularly hard with the potential for as many as 500,000 jobs lost.
The Premier plans to visit Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont on Tuesday to have the legislature dissolved and writs issued the following day.
The next provincial election was set to take place in June 2026.
