Chatham-Kent is taking steps to protect properties in the downtown Wheatley evacuation zone following a rash of break-ins in the area.

The municipality said the recent break-ins along Talbot Road East have prompted administration to hire a private company to provide 24-hour security for the site. Security personnel will remain in the area while the incidents are investigated.

According to Chatham-Kent Police, there have been five reported incidents since January 1st, two of which took place in the past week. Authorities say copper wire and alcohol were taken, and an undetermined amount of damage caused to the buildings, which were already left damaged from the 2021 gas explosion.

Pending council approval, the municipality is currently in the process of purchasing some of the properties that have been targeted. Demolition of the Talbot Road buildings is expected to take place in the spring.

Chatham-Kent Council has already approved spending $3.5 million to purchase five downtown Wheatley properties on Erie Street North.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity in downtown Wheatley is asked to contact the Chatham-Kent Police Service at 519-352-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
