Province Invests In Great Lakes Protection Through Walpole Island Program

Several initiatives aimed at strengthening the health and resiliency of the Great Lakes are being given a funding boost, including one on Walpole Island First Nation.

The Ontario government is investing $35,000 into the Thames River Youth Stewardship and Great Lakes Engagement Program on Walpole Island.

“Our local waterways are at the heart of our communities, supporting everything from clean drinking water to recreation and agriculture,” said Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault, in a news release. “By investing in these grassroots initiatives, our government is helping to protect the Great Lakes for future generations while supporting local leadership and environmental stewardship right here at home.”

The funding is part of a $7.3 million investment into several programs through the Great Lakes Program and the Great Lakes Local Action Fund.

Projects selected for funding are led by community-based organizations, municipalities, conservation authorities, academic institutions, and Indigenous communities to protect, conserve and restore the Great Lakes and their watersheds.
