The Ontario government is launching a mobile tech classroom program, in an effort to get more students and young people into careers in the skilled trades.
The province said it will invest $5.4 million to design and build three mobile skilled trades tech classrooms that will travel across the province. The program will be overseen by Skills Ontario.
The classrooms will feature hands-on learning stations and simulators for electrical systems, welding, crane operation, auto-painting, tire and brake work, heavy machinery and more.
The province helped to launch a similar pilot program in 2022 with one truck, which reached over 40,000 students and young people in Ontario.
“This program ignites an awareness of opportunities in the skilled trades and tech field that inspires more young people to pursue these careers,” said Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario.
The new mobile classrooms are expected to be fully operational by next summer to accommodate 150,000 visitors per year.
The project will be paid for through the government’s Skills Development Fund.
