The Ontario government is offering new incentives for personal support workers in an effort to expand care in the province’s long-term care homes.

The province said it will invest more than $300 million over three years to offer incentives of up to $25,400 for students and recent graduates of personal support worker education programs.

Students can receive up to $5,400 while completing a clinical placement at a long-term care home, $10,000 for students and recent graduates who commit to working in a long-term care home for 12 months, and another $10,000 to help with relocation costs for graduates who commit to working in a long-term care home in a rural, remote or northern community for 12 months.

The incentives are retroactive to April 1, 2023.

The provincial government said by training more PSWs, it hopes to increase the amount of direct care provided to each long-term care home resident to four hours of direct care per day by 2025.
