Province Rewards CK For Vastly Surpassing Housing Target

Chatham-Kent is once again being rewarded for smashing its provincial home-building targets in 2025.

The Ontario government has provided the municipality with $440,000 for the third round of the Building Faster Fund, after ground was broken on 577 new homes last year.

“Chatham-Kent is a community that is trending upwards, and this investment is another example of the opportunities that come with growth,” said CK Mayor Darrin Canniff in a news release. “When more people choose to live, work, and invest here, it strengthens our communities, supports local businesses, creates jobs, and helps us build a more vibrant future.”

With a provincial target of 92 homes, CK exceeded its goal by more than 500 per cent.

The province said the funding will help CK to build more homes and community infrastructure while supporting economic growth and keeping workers on the job.

“By rewarding communities that are helping to get more homes built, this funding will help ensure Chatham-Kent remains a great place to live, work, raise a family, and invest for years to come,” said Trevor Jones, the MPP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington.

First announced in August 2023, the Building Faster Fund is a three-year, $1.2 billion program that is designed to encourage municipalities to speed up approval processes and get more homes built faster. The program rewards municipalities that achieve at least 80 per cent of their provincially designated housing targets.

Between January and May 2026, ground was broken on a total of 26,084 homes, an increase of 17.2 per cent compared to the same time in 2025.
