Ontario teachers could soon have to take math tests of their own.

The provincial government revealed this week they were considering the annual mandatory testing.

Lambton Kent Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton says math scores have been declining for years.

“We know as of last year that about half of Grade 6 students were not meeting the requirements, and I hear it from parents right across the riding that they feel the quality of education – particularly when it comes to math – just isn’t where it should be,” says McNaughton.

McNaughton says the government is not going to abandon the education system.

“As a government, we’re not going to abandon our plan to deal with math and literacy problems in the education system. We know half of Grade 6 students are failing the math tests, and that’s just unfortunate and it’s wrong.  We need to prepare our students for the jobs of today and tomorrow and we need to always work for a better education system,” McNaughton says.
