Provincial Election Date Made Official

Premier Doug Ford has officially triggered an early election for Ontario.

At the request of the premier, Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont has signed a proclamation dissolving the 43rd Parliament of the Province of Ontario, as of 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Dumont has also called for the issuance of writs for the general election to be issued and named February 27 as the date of next general election.

Ford announced his intentions last week to call a snap election, more than a year ahead of initial election schedule for June 2026.

The premier has cited the need for a “strong mandate” to address the threat of tariffs made by US President Donald Trump as the reason for the early election.

Leaders of the opposition parties have criticized the move as politically motivated and an excuse to capitalize on good polling.
