Chatham-Kent looking to the public for ideas on how best to use land that has been donated to the municipality.

The estate of Thomas Duncan Campbell recently bequeathed the parcel of land at 275 King St. W in downtown Chatham, directly adjacent to the Third Street bridge.

In an effort to engage the community on the land’s future, the municipality has launched an online forum on the Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent website to hear from local residents.

“We are committed to using this land in a way that benefits the community,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff in a news release. “This is a unique opportunity for us to work together and create something truly remarkable for our community.”

Submissions will be open to the public until June 15, at which point the ideas will be reviewed by municipal administration.

In a report presented to council last week, administration previously suggested that the land could be used for additional parking in the downtown core.

Campbell, a former alderman on Chatham council who passed away in August of 2022, also bequeathed three other parcels of land on Riverview Drive to the municipality.
