Chatham councillor Michael Bondy is bringing forward a motion to council’s online meeting, asking council to reconsider municipal development charges that were approved at a council meeting last month.

Council approved the development charges in a bid to help ease the tax burden on existing taxpayers. However, the charges are estimated to cost developers over $17,000 extra in fees for a single detached home at the time a building permit is issued.

Chatham-Kent has experienced growth over the past couple of years. With that growth comes an increased cost to infrastructure such as roads. Instead of having taxpayers pay the extra costs, the development charges will pay for the majority of the upgrades.
