Ontario’s first case of rabies in raccoons in a decade is no cause for concern for Chatham-Kent.

That’s according to Chris Davies, Manager of Wildlife research and Monitoring with the MNRF.

“We have to date 10 cases.  Nine of them in the Hamilton area and one in Cayuga,” says Davies. “The distribution doesn’t tell us about the movement of the disease, and we’ve been doing a large amount surveillance in the area. We only have ten cases to date and the positive cases are probably limited to that area at this point.”

Davies says if you see a raccoon behaving strangely, you should contact the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit.
