A rainbow crosswalk is coming to downtown Chatham.
The motion was first raised by Councillor Brock McGregor, and approved Monday night.
The cost to paint the rainbow lines is about $8000, 75% of which is coming from the province through an inclusivity initiative with the Public Health Unit.
The remaining $2000 was raised by members of the community last night.
McGregor says no municipal dollars will be spent on the project, but the crosswalk is municipally significant.
“When we look at resident retraction and resident retention, those are the types of initiatives we have to make,” McGregor explains. “We promote this community as one that people can move to and enjoy a high quality of life, and part of that is being able to live your life in the open, and this is a big signal that you’re able to do that in Chatham-Kent.”
The rainbow crossing will be located at the intersection of King Street and Second Street.
McGregor says the work on the crosswalk won’t impact any bridge, pothole or other infrastructure work because it will be contracted out, and won’t take up time with Public Works.
