Chatham-Kent’s only men’s shelter is hoping to raise awareness about homelessness in the municipality.

The 5th annual Boxes and Blankets fundraiser is being held on Friday, September 20th outside the Downtown Chatham Centre.

Spokesperson Wanda Bell says the event, which raises money for Hope Haven, runs from 7pm until 7am.

“That’s the same time frame the homeless would be on the streets if it weren’t for Chatham Hope Haven.”

Bell says the event gives participants a first-hand understanding of what it’s like to be homeless.

“The stigma that’s attached to being homeless is horrific, and I’m hoping more people in Chatham-Kent will be empathetic,” Bell says. “It’s a temporary issue for most and then they’re moving on and improving their life.”

Cardboard boxes and blankets are being donated by local businesses for those who register beforehand.

Pledge forms are available at the office at 183 Wellington Street West or online at chathamhopehaven.com. You can also call 519 351-4010.
