Walpole Island fire officials are looking to local residents for help following a series of marsh fires on the First Nation.

The Walpole Island Fire Department responded to multiple marsh fires on Thursday, Friday and Sunday that officials said were deliberately set.

“To those responsible for setting fires: Please STOP,” fire officials said in a Facebook post. “This is not the time of year for open burning. These actions are destroying vital nesting grounds, and natural habitats that wildlife depend on—especially during this sensitive season when many animals are caring for their young.”

The fire department is asking anyone who witnesses someone deliberately setting fires to “safely take photos if possible” and immediately report the incident to police.

“Our dedicated volunteer firefighters have been working tirelessly since Thursday night, and are in need of a break. Your vigilance and support can help reduce unnecessary strain on our team, and ensure community safety,” fire officials said.
