This year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies at local cenotaphs will be private due to the COVID-19 concerns.
Formal events held by local branches of the Royal Canadian Legion Zone A-3 will be private, invitation-only events.
“Out of respect for our members and the general public, we are asking residents not attend the ceremonies at local Cenotaphs,” said Zone A-3 Commander Len Maynard. “We are encouraging residents to stay at home and view the pre-recorded session that takes place at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre.”
The ceremony will be shown by YourTV on Remembrance Day.
99.1 CKXS will also air a special Remembrance Day ceremony, beginning just before 11AM on Wednesday morning.
Residents are welcome to visit Cenotaphs after the 11 a.m. ceremonies while observing social distancing.
Although the pandemic is limiting the size of public gatherings, Maynard said the work of the legion in helping veterans, their families and the community through the annual poppy donation campaign continues.
“The support of the business community in placing donation boxes in their stores and offices has been a real boon to us,” he said. “The boxes have been placed in locations where donations can be made with limited physical contact.”
“Wherever you are at 11:00am please stop and remember the men and women who have made a sacrifice for this country.”
The Chatham-Kent Legions have also partnered with McKinlay Funeral Home to create a Veteran Tribute Video which can be seen at www.remembrancedayck.com.
