A Corunna resident has been bilked out of thousands of dollars after falling victim to a “grandparent scam.”
The Ontario Provincial Police said the victim contacted officers after receiving a phone call on December 4 from an individual, claiming to be their grandchild in need of money for an emergency. The victim was then transferred to a lawyer, who was said to be handling the case.
Arrangements were made and an unknown man attended the victim’s home to collect the money. The resident reported losing who reported losing more than $8,500 in the scam.
The victim was contacted a second time, however, the bank intervened when the scammers attempted to obtain an additional $8,200.
The suspect who attended the resident’s home is described as a 30-year-old man, around 5’10”, with dark hair and a dark complexion. He was also wearing a face mask.
