Residents Reminded To Salt Sidewalks

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is reminding residents to pre-treat sidewalks ahead of Friday’s winter storm.

While the municipality plows all sidewalks in the winter, residents are required to pre-treat any sidewalk surrounding their property within 24 hours of snowfall. A municipal bylaw also requires residents to de-ice sidewalks within 48 hours following snowfall.

Downtown business areas are exempt from the bylaw.

Property owners are encouraged to clear snow before it settles, chip ice during the day when it’s softer and easier to break, and used sand or salt to increase traction and melt the ice on sidewalks.
