A lit cigarette is getting the blame for causing a house fire in Chatham.
Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue said firefighters responded to a two-storey, single-family home at around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday to find flames and smoke coming out of the side of the structure.
The three occupants who were at home at the time of the fire escaped without injury.
Fire crews entered the home to begin extinguishing the blaze, however, the fire extended into the wall and ceiling, making the process more complex.
Once the fire was extinguished, investigators determined that it had been caused accidentally by a cigarette that had not been properly disposed of.
An estimated cost of the damages has not been released.
