Reviewing CK’s Flag Raising Policy

A rookie councillor wants the municipality to take a closer look at its policy when it comes to flags being raised at the civic centre.

At their next council meeting on April 24, Chatham-Kent councillor Rhonda Jubenville will be bringing in a motion regarding the municipality’s flag policy.

Instead of having flags that promote public awareness campaigns and community organizations, Jubenville wants to only have the Canadian, Ontario and Chatham-Kent flags fly outside the Civic Centre and municipal service centres.

Jubenville said some organizations, movements and groups have not had the opportunity to fly their flags in front of Chatham-Kent’s service centres because their requests have gone unanswered, so to avoid controversy and discrimination, she said it makes sense to have only the three government flags flown.

Jubenville said she is not against having any particular flag fly in front of the municipal buildings, even if it doesn’t align with her personal beliefs, but she doesn’t want to have the municipality pick and choose what flags to fly.

β€œTo me it is the safest way, rather than saying yes to some and no to others,” Jubenville said. β€œI would just say yes to all or no to all. That’s the way I see it to be the fairest.”
