A Chatham teen has been arrested after taking a pick-up truck on a bumpy ride through some local fields.

Chatham-Kent Police say shortly after 6:30 Sunday evening, a pickup truck struck the railway crossing at Park Street and Degge Street, then continued down Park before driving into a bean field.

Authorities tried to pull the driver over, but say the vehicle crossed a road into a cornfield before colliding with an apple tree.

The driver then fled on foot, but was eventually taken into custody.

According to police, the vehicle had been reported stolen from a local business.

The driver, a 16-year-old, is facing several charges, including failing to remain at the scene of a collision, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, and theft of a motor vehicle, among other offences.

The suspect was held at police headquarters for a bail hearing.
