Road reconstruction near downtown Chatham will likely cause some traffic headaches over the next few months.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has retained contractor Henry Heyink Construction Ltd. to complete the reconstruction of King Street West from Lacroix Street to Second Street. This will include new asphalt pavement, concrete curbs, sidewalks, streetlights and traffic signals, along with a new all-way stop at the King Street West and Second Street intersection, and a watermain replacement along First Street from King Street West to Wellington Street.
The first phase of the project will begin during the week of August 11 and will focus on King Street West from Lacroix Street to First Street. Access to King Street West will be limited to local traffic only during the construction.
As well, the King Street West and Lacroix Street intersection will be fully closed to traffic from August 18 until September 8 to facilitate excavation. A detour around the construction will be in place during this time, but pedestrian access will be accommodated.
The first phase of construction is expected to be nearly completed and restored in December. The second phase, focusing on King Street West from First Street to Second Street, is scheduled to begin in June 2026.
