As work continues to wind down near the site of the explosion in downtown Wheatley, more roadways are being reopened to traffic.
A provincial drilling contracting firm has completed its work and has left the site, allowing the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to reopen Elm Street between Erie Street North and Little Street, and Foster Street between Erie Street North and Victoria. Both roadways will be open by the end of the day on Tuesday.
In the meantime, work crews will be installing a “scrubber system” to capture any hydrogen sulphide as gas monitoring continues at the site. A flare stack that is currently onsite will remain in place as a backup system for the time being, the municipality said.
The municipality is continuing to review the evacuation zone in Wheatley, and the possible reopening of Erie Street North between Elm and Talbot Road.
An evacuation zone has been in place in downtown Wheatley since the explosion at 15 Erie St. N. on August 26, 2021.
