
Two people have been charged after a Chatham-Kent resident was assaulted with bear spray during a robbery.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said the victim spotted two individuals inside his truck, which was parked outside his Stewart Line residence in Wallaceburg, on Tuesday shortly before 4 a.m.
When the victim attempted to confront the individuals who were stealing items from inside the vehicle, he was sprayed with bear spray. The two thieves then fled into a nearby cornfield.
The incident was quickly reported to police, and officers were able to track down two suspects with the help of the K9 Unit and a drone operator. Officers also located a stolen vehicle near the scene of the robbery.
As a result, a 37-year-old Chatham man and a 30-year-old Wallaceburg woman are now charged with theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and possession of stolen property over $5,000. The man is additionally charged with robbery with violence, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and administering a noxious substance.
Both suspects were taken to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
