Safety A Priority On School Buses

Plans to get kids back into schools are constantly evolving, but getting them to and from school is just as important.

Kent Orr, General Manager of CLASS, in charge of student transportation, says there will be a number of safety precautions in place.

“Our protocols cover off everything from what’s going to happen before kids get on the bus, things like self-screening for drivers and students – don’t get on the bus if you’re sick,” Orr says. “Hand hygiene to make sure we have clean hands on the bus, for the drivers they’re going to have alcohol-based sanitizer with them, we’re asking parents to make sure their students wash their hands before they get on the bus.”

Orr says additional safety measures will be in place at loading and unloading, including wearing masks and assigned seating for everyone.

“You may see drivers putting their face shield on as the kids get on and off the bus, and we’re doing high touch cleaning,” Orr explains. “Something we normally don’t do every day is disinfect and clean buses, normally we do do that once a week week, we’re going to be doing that twice a day.”

All of the agency’s COVID-19 safety precautions can be found online at www.cklass.ca. Parents and guardians are encouraged to review the measures and decide for themselves if they feel comfortable sending their kids on the bus.
