With the final phase of work underway on Chatham’s 5th Street Bridge, officials are keeping safety in mind.
However, Chatham-Kent’s manager of infrastructure services, Chris Thibert, says security really falls under the contractor’s domain.
“All of our construction sites are the responsibility of the contractor, it’s their job to make sure it’s safe and maintained not just for worker safety but for public safety as well,” Thibert says. “Of course we are assisting, we have notified our Chatham-Kent Police services, we have additional resources watching over this bridge and making sure it’s being visited throughout the night.”
Vandalism forced the full closure of the bridge for a month.
The span was reopened to traffic yesterday, although work on the sidewalk and other finishing touches are expected to take another month to complete.
