The local fire department is asking Chatham-Kent residents to keep safety in mind this Canada Day weekend.
Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue officials recommend leaving the fireworks to the experts. However, fireworks can be set off in Chatham-Kent three days before, on and three days after July 1 until 11 p.m. Fireworks can only be set off on private property and not municipal property such as streets and parks.
Parents are also urged to keep sparklers away from children as they can cause burns and serious injuries. Fire officials suggest celebrating with glow sticks and other glow-in-the-dark items instead.
And for anyone heading out on the water this weekend, fire officials said everyone should ensure they have a lifejacket and always monitor the weather forecast.
“For many families, the long weekend will include activities such as boating and swimming,” said Public Information Officer Whitney Burk. “The absence of adult supervision is a factor in most child drownings. Whether it’s a pool or at the beach, always watch children actively around water – even if they can swim.”
