A Sarnia high school student is getting international attention for a science fair project.
Grade 12 student Annabelle Rayson won the top prize at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize Awards for her project on algae bloom prevention.
The judges called Rayson’s research a “potential solution for a multi-faceted global problem.”
In accepting the award, Annabelle said she was “absolutely honoured to be on the stage representing Canada” and also honoured to “represent women and girls in STEM.”
“Quite often we don’t see a lot of us out there,” she said. “So I’m very proud to be standing up here to represent any little girl at home who dreams of having her own microscope and lab coat!”
Rayson, who beat out 36 other international entries, returns from Sweden this week before heading for the World Science Fair in the Netherlands.
Rayson attends St Patrick’s Catholic High School, and will be serving as one of two student trustees on the St Clair Catholic District School Board this coming year.
