Chatham-Kent police are warning residents about a fraudster calling people in the municipality.

Police say a would-be victim contacted them on May 8th regarding a suspicious caller. A man allegedly identified himself as working for the “Criminal Investigations of Canada” and requested cash to pay an outstanding tax debt.

The caller gave a badge number, case number, and warrant number and identified himself as a member of a police service.

He demanded the “outstanding debt” be paid immediately.

The service wants people to know police never make that sort of request and if you’re suspicious, hang up and call police.
