After yesterday’s announcement that Andrew Scheer is stepping down as federal conservative leader, the party’s caucus has agreed that he should stay on as interim leader until a replacement can be found.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer in Chatham, February 2018.

His decision to resign came as news brook that he’d used party money to help pay for his kids’ private school education.

Chatham-Kent-Leamington Conservative MPP Dave Epp released a statement yesterday thanking Scheer for his years of public service.

“For now, we thank the leader for his service, as a party we remain diligent to our duties as Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition; as I continue to focus on the needs and interests of the people of Chatham-Kent-Leamington.”

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Lianne Rood echoed those ssentiments in a statement of her own on social media.

“I’d like to sincerely thank Andrew Scheer for his principled leadership, and for his dedicated service to the betterment of Canada,” Rood tweeted. “I’m grateful for the honour to continue serving under his leadership in the coming months, and to working together in a united caucus.”

As the party begins preparations for a leadership race, MPs will be leaving Parliament Hill today for their six-week winter break.
