In an effort to better understand its students, the local public school board is launching a census to gather demographic information.
The Lambton-Kent District School Board’s “Count Me In LKDSB Student Census” will take place between March 1 to 25. The voluntary and confidential survey will gather will collect demographic information about students’ race, ethnicity, language, religion, gender identity and sexual orientation.
“We are committed to removing barriers to education,” said Director of Education John Howitt in a news release. “The census will provide us with additional information to better understand individual student needs and our school communities at large, as well as identify and address discrimination and systemic barriers while improving outcomes for all students.”
Census questionnaires for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 will be sent to parents/guardians to complete, while high school students will be provided with a link to the census to complete themselves during class time.
The results of the census will be reported to the community in the fall of 2022 and will help the school board make informed decisions about programming to support student success and allocate resources to where they are needed most.
