With nearly 17,000 kids riding the bus to school every day in Chatham-Kent and Lambton County, officials are reminding everyone to be safe.
Today marks the start of School Bus Safety Week
Kent Orr, general manager of the Chatham-Kent Lambton Administration School Services – or CLASS –says drivers are getting better about remembering to be careful in school zones, but more needs to be done.
“There’s a growing pain during the beginning of the school year when people are getting accustomed to buses being back on the road in September,” Orr says. “But you’d be surprised how many people don’t see a 40-foot yellow and black vehicle. Bad things can happen really quick.”
Orr says students have a role to play as well, paying attention to the driver’s instructions and using common sense when crossing the road getting to and from the bus.
