School Safety Zone Debate

Wallaceburg Councillor Carmen McGregor wants to make areas around schools safer.

She’s asking Council to introduce Community Safety Zones outside all schools in Chatham-Kent.

The zones would see speed limits reduced to 30 km/hr and speeding fines doubled.

McGregor says it makes sense to lower speed limits in school areas because some are located where highways end.

“For example in Ridgetown on Highway 21, you’re coming in to Naahii Ridge School, you’r coming right in on the highway so there’s just a little bit of time to slow down,” McGregor says. “I think there’s anything we can do more than try and provide a safe area for our kids to get to and from school.”

Her motion will be debated at tonight’s council meeting.
