Second-Degree Murder Charge Laid In Walpole Island Shooting

A second-degree murder charge has been laid following the New Year’s Day shooting death of a man on Walpole Island.

The Ontario Provincial Police and the Walpole Island Police Service discovered a 29-year-old Walpole Island resident on Squirrel Island Road with apparent gunshot wounds at around 8 a.m. on January 1. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cody Roegiest, 32, of Walpole Island, was arrested that day in connection with the shooting. According to the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia, he has been charged with second-degree murder, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm with intent.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
