A Chatham-Kent councillor is seeking solutions to make the CASO Trail safer for walkers.

Ward 3 representative John Wright says the trail, which is intended for walking and cycling, has been subject to vandalism and reckless driving by ATV users.

“We have a lot of vandalism up here,” Ward 3 representative John Wright told CKXS News.

“They are even cutting new gates off that people put up to stop the ATVs from going down it, and they put cement blocks out, and they are just moving the cement blocks.”

The 11 kilometre trail runs along the former Canadian Southern Rail Line corridor, south of the 401.

Wright put forth a notice of motion at council’s last meeting to request members of municipal administration consult with Entegrus and local police to find options to address and prevent damage from improper use of the trail.

“Now the people can’t walk down it because the ATVs are going up and down it so fast it and they won’t move over for the people,” Wright explained. “They forced the people out of there. It’s bad, somebody is going to get hurt.”

Wright said the $5,000 fine for motorized use on the trail is hard for police to enforce.

“They can’t go down the trail in their cruisers,” said Wright.  “We are trying to get something stopped on it.”

Wright’s motion will go before council on Monday, November 17.
