Two people have been arrested following a shoplifting incident in Chatham.

Police were called to a retail business on St Clair Street near Pioneer Line after a man allegedly filled two carts with merchandise and fled the store.

Officers were able to track the getaway vehicle and pulled over the suspect on Highway 40 just south of Claymore Line.

Authorities say the man allegedly gave officers a fake name, but once they determined his true identity, they also discovered both he and a female passenger were wanted on outstanding warrants.

The 40-year-old Walpole Island man is charged with theft, possession of stolen property, obstructing police, failing to attend court, and two counts of possess of a controlled substance. He was held in custody for a bail hearing.

A 41-year-old woman, also from Walpole Island, is charged with three counts of driving while prohibited. She was released from custody with conditions and an October court date.
