A local man is facing charges after a shopping cart full of items was stolen from a retail store in Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called to the St. Clair Street store at around 4:30 p.m. on Monday after a man filled a shopping cart with merchandise and left without paying. He was seen leaving in a U-Haul vehicle, which was later located on Fifth Street.

Following an investigation, officers identified a suspect and took him into custody.

As a result, a 51-year-old Chatham man is now charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. He has since been released from custody with conditions and a future court date.
