Chatham-Kent has one of the lowest agriculture tax ratios in the province at 22%.
West Kent representative Lauren Anderson believes it warrants a conversation to raise the farm tax class ratio by a single percentage point. She tabled a motion to have administration prepare a tax policy report and bring it back to council at their next council meeting.
The large majority of Ontario’s 400 municipalities have a farm tax class ratio of 25%. In fact, Chatham-Kent’s rate is one of the lowest in the province.
After a close but successful 9-8 vote, Chatham-Kent staff will now consult with stakeholders over the next couple of weeks and council will use the report’s information to discuss moving the farm tax ratio to 23% at the next council meeting on April 24.
