Chatham-Kent Police have been cleared of any wrongdoing following an incident involving a local woman earlier this year.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit launched an investigation on July 31 after a woman passed out while in police custody.
According to the province’s police watchdog, the woman was taken into custody for failing to comply with conditions of a release order. She was remanded into custody.
Security footage of the holding cell at the Chatham courthouse later that afternoon showed the woman pulling a vial from her underwear and consuming an unknown substance. Officers later found her unresponsive. Two doses of Naloxone were administered and emergency medical services were called. The 46-year-old woman was taken to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, where staff confirmed she had multiple illicit substances in her system, including fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine.
SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident and the case has been closed.
