Smoke Alarm Battery Change Time

It’s that time of year once again – we spring forward this weekend.

Clocks go forward one hour early Sunday morning, marking the change to Daylight Saving Time.

Chatham-Kent Fire public educator Whitney Burk says it’s a great time to change something else as well.

“We spring ahead one hour and we’re reminding people to install new batteries into your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms,” says Burk. “So you need to check your alarms by pressing the test buttons at least once a month.”

Burk says alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries changed every 6 months, and that alarms older than 10 years should be replaced.
