Water Wells First spokesman Kevin Jakubec addresses council on October 24, 2016.

The Water Wells First group is back to square one after suggestions by Council fell through.

Earlier this fall, Chatham-Kent council passed a motion to have Water Wells First meet with the Thames-Sydenham Source Water Protection Committee, and hopefully have the two groups work together to address issues with dirty well water in Dover.

Source Protection Coordinator Michelle Fletcher says the Committee is limited in what they can do.

Fletcher says there is a list of 21 prescribed drinking water threats under the Clean Water Act regulations, and the issue with the Dover wells is not one of the prescribed threats they’re able to create policies with.

“Right now the Clean Water Act is being applied to municipal drinking water sources only,” she explains, “so it’s not being used for private, individual wells.”

Instead, a representative from Chatham-Kent may be appointed to the Committee in the new year.
