A fundraiser in support of end-of-life care in Chatham-Kent is being hailed as a success.

The spring “Handbags for Hospice” event was held at the Everest Convention Centre on April 24, raising $30,000 to support local families receiving care from the Chatham-Kent Hospice.

“These funds will be used to provide our hospice residents and their families with compassionate care and our community with grief and bereavement support at no cost to them,” said Jodi Maroney, the executive director of the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation, in a news release.

The sold-out fundraiser is typically held in October, however, another group of volunteers was inspired to organize a second event in the spring to meet demand for tickets.

The evening included games of Bingo where the prize for each round was a designer handbag, a raffle table offering prizes generously donated by community members and local businesses, and a Platinum Purse draw.

The annual fall Handbags for Hospice event will be held on October 16.
