St Clair Region Conservation Authority Issues Flood Warning

A flood warning has been issued by the St Clair Region Conservation Authority.

Officials say some parts of the watershed received more than 20mm of rain and snow over the past few days, and coupled with milder temperatures earlier in the week, has resulted in melting snow, deteriorating ice conditions, and increased runoff.

Higher water levels are expected to make their way through the system over the next five days. Officials say the return to mild temperatures over the next week will produce further runoff which will slow the decline of water levels.

Meantime, officials with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority issued another flood update last night, saying an ice jam that formed at the mouth of the Thames River at Lighthouse Cove has cleared away. Officials say the river will continue to rise, flooding river flats from Delaware to Chatham, but levels on smaller waterways are falling.

Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous and unstable ice conditions, slippery banks, and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.
