A First Nations community in Sarnia has declared a state of emergency.

Chief Christopher Plain put the measure in place in keeping with Aamjiwnaang’s emergency response plan following what he described as the ongoing and excessive discharge of the cancer-causing chemical benzene from INEOS Styrolution’s facility on Tashmoo Avenue.

The company issued a notice last weekend warning of elevated flaring during a shutdown to for maintenance and to address a mechanical issue, and warned the community on Thursday of temporary elevated benzene levels.

In the meantime, the Aamjiwnaang Band Council has offered to help residents who feel unsafe in their homes find alternate accommodations. Those who need assistance are asked to contact Ashley Jackson at 519-328-6653.

Chief Plain says that while the state of emergency is a serious measure, the band council is taking action to ensure they have adequate resources at their disposal should further measures be required.
