Staying Safe During the Summer Heat

The dog days of summer are upon us, and local paramedics are encouraging everyone to play safe.

Peter Morassutti, Acting Chief and General Manager of Chatham-Kent EMS, says there are a few simple steps everyone can take to stay safe.

“Stay cool, stay in the shade, and drink as much as possible,” Morassutti said. “Bring water, bring electrolytes with you, wear light, breathable clothing, cooling packs, wet towels might even be good. Try and stay out of the sun as much as possible.”

Residents are also urged to keep informed about any weather or heat warnings and be aware of the symptoms of heat-related illness.

“As soon as you stop sweating, you know you’re in a world of hurt,” Morassutti explains. “The body has a natural cooling system and it’s your sweat, it helps evaporate the heat out of your body. Once you feel yourself stop sweating, you’re near that critical emergency and you need to call 9-1-1.”

Those at greater risk of heat-related illness include older adults, those living alone, the very young, people with chronic illnesses, and even healthy people if they participate in strenuous activities and do not take precautions.

Morassutti is also advising local residents to have a summer first aid kit, complete with antiseptic wipes, allergy medication, sunscreen, aloe, bug repellant, and water.
