Steinhoff House Faces Demolition

The Municipal Heritage Committee isn’t pleased with council’s decision to allow a property in Wallaceburg that dates back to the 1860s to be demolished.

Chair Chris Williams says the Steinhoff House at 595 Wallace Street could have been saved, but council tends to favour the owner’s wishes.

“They are very heritage-minded when the homeowners want it, but when the homeowners don’t, they tend to want to respect the homeowner’s wishes, Williams says. “A lot of the designation act is to protect the home from its owners for future owners.”

Williams says he believes the property was allowed to fall into disrepair, but could have been saved if steps had been taken to prevent its deterioration.

Officials say the structure is now beyond repair due to vandalism and lack of upkeep.
