A Chatham man is facing a slew of charges after a run-in with police over the weekend.

Officers responded to a Third Street business in downtown Chatham shortly before 8:30 Sunday morning and say the accused tried to steal a bike leaning against the building’s wall.

A suspect was identified with the help of surveillance footage and located crossing the Fifth Street Bridge half an hour later.

Authorities say the man was uncooperative and resisted arrest, but was eventually taken into custody. During a search of the suspect, officers found methamphetamine in his pocket.

The 28-year-old is charged with theft, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, and drug possession. He was taken to police headquarters and released with conditions and a date in court next month.
