Stolen Vehicle Crashes On Walpole Island After Evading Police

A Wallaceburg man has been arrested after he allegedly fled from police and crashed a stolen vehicle on Walpole Island First Nation.

The Ontario Provincial Police said officers responded to a traffic complaint in St. Clair Township shortly after 2:40 a.m. on Sunday, which involved a vehicle that had been reported stolen from an address on St. Clair Parkway not long before.

The vehicle was located and officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on St. Clair Parkway, north of Dufferin Avenue, however, the driver fled. Police did not pursue the vehicle in the interest of public safety.

Not long after, at around 3:35 a.m., officers were called to Chiefs Road, north of Austin Road, on Walpole Island after the stolen vehicle was involved in a single-vehicle collision.

A 33-year-old Wallaceburg man was arrested at the scene without incident. He is now charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, impaired driving, flight from police, failing or refusing a breath sample, and driving while under suspension.

The accused will answer the charges in court next month.
