As work continues on uncapped gas wells in Wheatley, two streets have been reopened near the site of last summer’s explosion.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said Talbot Road and Erie Street South were reopened on Tuesday and traffic lights have been reactivated.

The update follows the reduction of the evacuation zone at the site of the August 26 explosion on Monday.

In the meantime, the municipality is continuing to investigate the two remaining uncapped wells this week. A conductor pipe will be driven over the well at the far end of the municipal parking lot and residents may notice hammering sounds.

A total of 67 households and 44 business properties were evacuated following the explosion in Wheatley on August 26 that destroyed one building and injured 20 people.
