SUNDAY THOUGHT with Pastor Brian Horrobin:
I am no fan of Bill Maher but he did say something once that made me cringe due to its partial truth.
He said, “To most Christians the Bible is like a software license. Nobody actually reads it. They just scroll to the bottom and click ‘I agree’.” I say ‘partial truth’ because his statement is a sweeping generalization of all professing Christians, and in that sense, is unfair.
However, and this I must confess, he still makes a valid point. The Bible is not meant to be a coffee table ornament that is the topic of evening conversation. Nor is it a genie’s lamp to rub when you’re in a fix or need a selfish wish granted.
I once visited some guys in a dorm room during Christmas exams at the University of Windsor when I was a student there. Upon entering the room I noticed a fishnet fastened to the four corners of the ceiling filled with empty beer cans, pin up posters covering the walls, and a lone Gideon New Testament sitting on a small table between two well-worn reclining chairs.
When I asked about the Bible I was told in no uncertain terms that it was their ticket to passing grades! Strange, but true, and you heard it here first! No, the Bible is an instruction book for life that is meant to be read and its directions followed.
The apostle Paul had this to say about the Bible in 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
It would be foolish to treat it like a software license. This book has the power to change your life if you take it seriously and seek out a relationship with the author, God Himself.
I encourage you to investigate the claims of the Bible and see for yourself how it can help you in every area of your life. All you have to do is pick it up and start reading!
